Boris under fire over missing £5.3m funds for the homeless
The Guardian today report that homelessness charities are pressing Boris to explain why they have yet to see £5.3m of government funding intended to help rough sleepers.
"The cash has gone missing from Johnson's budget for support for rough sleepers, which is wholly underwritten by Whitehall. Repeated efforts by the charities have failed to win assurances that it will be restored."
With services for the homeless facing cuts and closure in the capital, the missing funds are having a direct impact on some of London's most vulnerable. Given the fact that homelessness has risen by 14% in the last year, the biggest rise in nine years, charities are understandably up in arms. There are an estimated 700 "entrenched" rough sleepers in the capital, although some surveys put the figure closer to 2000. Homelessness charities have written an open letter to Boris Johnson, stating:
"...the £33.8m was specifically transferred from central government to be spent on commissioning services that cannot or would not be provided at a London borough level. Cutting those resources can only imply that in future years such services will in turn be ended or their funding cut back …"
Boris has previously pledged to end homelessness in London, but the latest revelations that he has diverted funding to help rough sleepers shows the Mayor's pledge to be yet more hot air. One charity in Camden only has enough money to stay afloat until September. The charities have not received a reply from Boris on why the funds have been diverted and whether they will see the cash at all. It seems the Mayor is more interested in vanity buses and cable cars than keeping people off the streets.

Completely selfish scunner, who had the cheek to begin by calling in Tory auditors to examine Ken Livingstone's regime. Apart from Lee Jasper's careless, but honest, disbursements to organisations none of the ensuing rated a headline.
This missing £5m will be underplayed too, because the UK media is mostly run in the interests of its tax evading/avoiding foreign/Channel Isles owners.
